When The Lonely Tell Their Story

A documentary regarding the "Lonely Funeral Project" (De Eenzame Uitvaart). Every year in Amsterdam 15 to 20 people die without having anyone there to arrange their funeral. The reasons why differ, but the thing they have in common is that they die alone. Therefore the city of Amsterdam, along with a group of poets, arrange a funeral and a personal poem for the deceased. This documentary explores the different sides of the Lonely Funeral Project, from the poets to the funerals, and the founder of the project, Frank Starik Ger Fritz.

Director Biography - Başar Yüksel

Başar Yüksel is a second-year student in the University of Amsterdam doing his bachelors on Media and Culture. He graduated with an IB diploma and has taken high-level Film courses. Born in Istanbul, Turkey in 2003; Başar Yüksel has started working within the industry both in television and advertising. In his high school years has gained several nominations and has earned an honourable mention.

Director Statement

The Lonely Funeral project is a project that writes poems for people who pass away without anyone and did not get a chance to be remembered with the memories they have.

But isn’t being remembered everyones right?

In this documentary, we bring many perspectives from people that are working for the project, show people who learn about the story on the spot and express their understanding of the core ideas of the project, while also emphasising the importance of telling your own story and that this could be anyone, even you.
