When Janet Sleeps

At 72, Janet Lumb, a third-generation Chinese-Canadian, is losing her memory and can no longer remember her friend Laurence. In an effort to create new memories that won’t fade, Laurence improvises a trip to Ecuador. He paints a portrait of this artist, always cheerful and a bit punk, whose vibrant life has left its mark on Montreal’s artistic and community circles.

A vibrant film about fading memory, and about what can still be built despite it all.

Director Biography - Laurence Ly

en. Of Cambodian and Vietnamese descent, Laurence Ly holds a master’s degree in Film and Moving Images from Université du Québec à Montréal and is a graduate of Institut de l'image et du son in film directing. A director, producer, and screenwriter, he has directed the short films The Little Shopping Trolley (2024) and Maybe in the Snow (2025). He is also a curator and programmer for the film section at the Festival Accès Asie.

D’origine cambodgienne et vietnamienne, Laurence Ly détient une maîtrise en Cinéma et image en mouvement de l'Université du Québec à Montréal et est diplômé de l'Institut de l'image et du son en réalisation. Réalisateur, producteur et scénariste, il a réalisé les courts métrages Le petit panier à roulettes (2024) et Fausse neige (2025). Born in Toronto in 1953, Janet Lumb, saxophonist, composer for some fifty films, co-founder of the Festival Accès Asie, artistic director, curator, organizer, punk, anarchist, and activist, is gradually losing her memory. But she always tells herself this: “My belief in chaos theory — that there is order in chaos — leads me to take chances in the magic of the moment.”

WHEN JANET SLEEPS is neither a biography tracing a life story nor a collection of testimonials from those who knew her. It is an intimate portrait that tells the story of a kind-hearted elderly woman who has accumulated experiences and forged, deep within herself, a personal philosophy throughout her life. Thus, today, amidst her forgetfulness, uncertainty, and doubts, she manages, almost instinctively, to embrace the unknown and continue her life’s work. It is a tribute to old age, to experience, to the passing of time, and to the possibility of creating new memories.

This life’s work, I believe, finds its source in part in her mother, Jean Lumb, a prominent figure in Canada and the first Chinese woman and restaurateur to receive the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honor.

In that sense, this film is also, for me, an urgent attempt to redefine, through my own doubts, the reasons that drive me to do this work, and the deeper meaning of my journey. And I realize that there is a profound strength in Janet that inspires me to keep going and to trust that things will work out.

Mais elle se répète toujours ceci : “ Ma croyance dans la théorie du chaos — qu’il y a de l’ordre dans le chaos — m’amène à prendre des chances dans la magie du moment. “

QUAND JANET DORT n’est pas une biographie retraçant un parcours ni une suite de témoignages de celles et ceux qui l’ont connue. C’est un portrait intime qui raconte l’histoire d’une femme âgée, bienveillante, qui a accumulé des expériences et forgé, au plus profond d’elle-même, une philosophie personnelle tout au long de sa vie. Ainsi, aujourd’hui, dans ses oublis, dans l’incertitude et les doutes, elle parvient, presque par réflexe, à accueillir l’inconnu et à poursuivre son travail de vie. C’est un éloge de la vieillesse, de l’expérience, du temps qui passe et de la possibilité de créer de nouveaux souvenirs.

Ce travail de vie, je crois, trouve en partie sa source chez sa mère, Jean Lumb, figure marquante du Canada et première femme chinoise et restauratrice à recevoir l’Ordre du Canada, la plus haute distinction civile du pays.

En ce sens, ce film est aussi, pour moi, une tentative urgente de redéfinir, à travers mes propres doutes, les raisons qui me poussent à faire ce métier, le sens intime de mon parcours. Et je réalise qu’il y a, chez Janet, une force profonde qui m’inspire à continuer et à faire confiance à la suite des choses.
