Director Biography - Federico Casal

Writer-director from Montevideo, Uruguay. Federico made his first short films as a teenager before studying literary translation and piano. He began writing scripts in English in 2009, doing so more professionally from 2016 onwards. That year, he joined the editorial team of an online film criticism magazine and premiered his medium-length film «Long Verse of the Night».

His short film «Wanderer» was a finalist in Ryuichi Sakamoto's international competition (2017) and was screened at the 2019 edition of Nippon Connection, the world’s largest platform for Japanese cinema. His feature-length scripts «Unwelcome» and «So Far Away, So Near» have been finalists in several Hollywood festivals and competitions. In 2020, he participated in the Nostos Screenwriting Retreat with a contemporary adaptation of «Bartleby, the Scrivener» That same year, he took Sundance Co//ab courses on directing actors and writing for television, the latter resulting in the first draft of «Stranded», a sci-fi pilot.

Since 2022, Federico has worked as a photographer at the acting workshop Horas Cámara, led by Joaquín Mauad and Javier Chávez. In December of that year, he directed the short «What Remains for Tomorrow», which premiered on January 19, 2024, at the José Ignacio International Film Festival. Its story is based on an early version of «Correspondences», Federico’s debut feature as a director, which he is currently developing with a local production company.

In 2023, «Correspondences» was part of the Cine Qua Non Storylines Lab, and in 2024, it was selected for the Sur Frontera WIP LAB (XV International Frontier Film Festival), where it was pitched and formed an alliance with a Brazilian production company. In addition to developing other projects, Federico is writing a sci-fi comedy, «New Theory on Napping», which was selected for the 2024 edition of the PCI LAB (Argentina).

Director Statement

"What Remains for Tomorrow" was initially conceived as a teaser or proof of concept for a feature I'm currently developing. Although this project has changed considerably in the past two years, both works are informed by the same narrative concept: two individuals whose lives would probably never cross start a passionate romance in an old empty house for sale. The setting works as a metaphor for the entire relationship, prompting questions such as: Will they inhabit the space fully and make it their own or take extra care to not leave a mark? Will the relationship go beyond the nostalgic romanticism of the first days, as accentuated by the walls and atmospheres of the more-than-a-century-old house? Will they find a way to face their problems as a first step towards loving each other openly in the world or is either of the two not capable of taking the relationship outside the house, for whatever reason? Lightly touching on the subject of the loss of architectural heritage where I live, "What Remains for Tomorrow" strives to portray a complicated love story articulated by a beautiful yet decadent place frozen in time.
