We shall go to Viana
The song Havemos de ir a Viana, based on the original poem by Pedro Homem de Melo, written by Alain Oulman, and originally interpreted by Amália Rodrigues, is widely accepted as the anthem of Viana do Castelo, an ancient medium size city located in northern Portugal, at the mouth of the Lima River, facing the Atlantic Ocean. The song features prominently in the most famous local festival known in Portugal, the Romaria da Senhora d’Agonia.
Due to the necessary public health measures brought about by the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the most vibrant and symbolic traditional events of the beloved festival were cancelled. This video was created to bring some of the joy usually felt during the festivities to the people of Viana (known as “the Vianenses”).
The production gathers 48 local performing artists, professionals and amateurs alike, and features a diversity of musical genres, including Fado, Rock, Jazz, Hip-hop, Classical and Folk music, etc. This collaboration celebrates and memorializes the heart-felt enthusiasm and pride of the Vianenses for their Romaria da Senhora d’Agonia.
