Funnily enough the idea for this all started with a real event. One night a friend of mine told me about how in 1987 his uncle drove to the US border to get beer on Easter Sunday. Of course, his story is much different than the final script written for the film. The plan was for it to stick to 1987 before I realized it's a bit harder than I thought to get cars almost 40 years old. So 2007 it was! Made a few creative decisions and added some physical antagonists to mess with our heroes and we had our film.

Road trips were a massive part of my childhood. Growing up in a small town we had to constantly drive to the city for all sorts of things. Little things like fast food would always be an adventure. But the downside of a road trip is the close proximity to others and I tried to really play that up for the film. You always end up bickering at some point no matter how close you are and that can make for some great petty dialogue. Taking those experiences and applying it to the film was a lot of fun, especially while giving the actors some leeway to improvise some lines. In particular, I loved Aiden H. Richards' audition for Small Town Timmy so much that during filming I told him to say anything he wanted between scripted dialogue. And he knocked it out of the park!

The 'buddy' trope is so much fun to work with when you get two leads that can truly banter. Some of the big inspirations for this film include "Superbad" and "The World's End", all of which involve a journey, multiple leads and clever dialogue. But most importantly, they take place mainly on a single day and the chaos within it.

In the previously mentioned films, Gary and Seth are the primary protagonists. But are they good people? Not at first. I really enjoy characters like this, especially in the comedic aspect. That's why you'll see some of that come up in We're Out of Beer. This film was an absolute blast to create and I hope it gives a laugh to all who view it.
