Wellington's First Line

On September 27, 1810, the Battle of Bussaco was fought in the central region of Portugal. In confrontation more than 60 thousand French soldiers, under the command of one of the most respected marshals of Imperial France of Napoleon Bonaparte, André Masséna, against the approximately 50 thousand men of the army composed of British and Portuguese forces, led by the Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, the commander who would defeat Napoleon at Waterloo once and for all.
This first large-scale confrontation in the last of the three invasions perpetrated by the Gauls in Lusitanian lands, although not decisive at the moment, left indelible marks in the collective memory of the country. It reinforced confidence in the warlike ability of English and Portuguese troops who ended up not only liberating Portugal, but also the entire Europe.
