Director Biography - Jesús Castillo

Jesús Javier Castillo is an panamanian emerging film director with a passion for musicals and drama, who seeks to tell emotional stories that critique Panamanian reality. Using double standards in his characters and, occasionally, evocative music, Jesús explores deep and resonant themes from his environment. His debut feature, "We are not the same", is a deeply personal project that reflects his vision of the Panamanian LGBTQI+ community, to which he belongs.
Graduated in 2019 as an Audiovisual Producer from the University of Panama, Jesús dedicated the following years to the making of his first feature film. He complemented his training with diplomas from Ecuela Nacional de Cine de Colombia and Casa Comal in Guatemala, which allowed the evolution of his project.
Despite being a first-time director, Jesús is meticulous in creating emotional and immersive atmospheres, leading the viewer to adopt a position of complicity or rejection towards his characters. He prefers fixed shots, giving all his focus to the characters, so that it is they, in the environments in which they are immersed, who convince the viewer of his philosophies. When he uses moving shots, he generally does so with music, creating choreographies inspired by Damien Chazelle.
It can be said that Jesús Javier Castillo seeks not only to entertain, but also to inspire and provoke reflection in his audience. He is committed to cinema as a means of social change and hopes that his work continues to open important dialogues about identity and acceptance
