I saw a shirt this week that stated, “Documentaries stop fascism,” and it was a moment that really resonated with me. We Are The Redline became bigger than what I imagined and started touching on topics I never knew I would cover within the United States.
Several people approached me when the genocide started and asked me what I was going to film. I knew we would be covering an aspect of what was happening in Palestine, but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted our team to capture. I didn’t want to take away from Palestinian and Palestinian American voices. I was born in the US, and I didn’t support what was happening. That thought gave me the thesis for the documentary; I knew what I wanted to produce and direct. I wanted to show the world that in the United States, US citizens were fighting for an end to genocide, that within the US, people would not abandon or forget about innocent people losing their lives for simply existing. I thought I was just going to cover the protest of Americans supporting victims overseas, but the documentary explores the fight for human rights right here in the United States as well.
The title We Are The Redline was born out of President Biden’s quote, “It is a red line, but I’m never going to leave Israel,” and the Redline protest that happened after he said that. It was the first protest we covered for the documentary, but I didn’t realize in that moment that, being on the Redline, protestors would soon be risking their freedom to defend the freedom of others. The documentary soon became a window into the beginning of the fight against the illegal detention of innocent people by ICE and the Trump administration.
Human rights matter no matter where you live, who you worship, or what you believe. We Are The Redline is a documentary that shows that people will stand in front of what was once the most powerful office in the world and demand that human rights, here at home and across the globe, are respected. I am proud to have directed and produced this documentary.
