Director Biography - Justin N Lacy

Justin Lacy is an experimental songwriter, filmmaker and animator residing in Wilmington, NC. In 2018, Lacy premiered “Weeds” — a construction-paper music video he stop-motion animated entirely by hand, frame by frame, for 2,609 frames. His oddball vocal delivery of imagery steeped in sweeping orchestral folk arrangements has earned him a signature sound difficult to pin down.

Lacy has completed 2 film scores, 3 EPs, 4 albums and several music videos and short films. Today, he often performs with an orchestral ensemble of clarinets, mandolins, strings and voices, sometimes cramming up to 12 musicians on stage. He is a three-time winner of the NC Regional Artist Grant as well as the Filmed in NC grant. His work has appeared at film festivals around the world.

Director Statement

Have you ever been hiking in the woods, and from the corner of your eye, felt the presence of a snake, or a bear? Maybe it was just a squirrel, or perhaps nothing at all. “From the Corner of My Eye" explores tension, perception, and the untamed instincts lost in modern life -- that encounter with something wild that can make us feel totally present and totally alive. Built on songwriter E.G. Phillips’ illustrative storytelling, the music video blurs the line between reality and imagination, placing flat, paper-cut puppets in a lush, wintery, three-dimensional boreal forest. Shadows sway and light shift to suggest a unseen presence out of reach. Through handmade stop-motion and practical effects, this project invites viewers to embrace uncertainty and rediscover a primal awareness of the world around them.
