Walter

A ten-year-old boy insists his red plastic bucket contains his pet wave.

Walter is a tender, imaginative portrait of a child navigating grief within a fractured family learning to find a new sense of stability. Blending whimsy with emotional truth, the film explores the rhythms of life—how things build, crest, and fall—and the quiet resilience it takes to begin again.

Anchored by a remarkable young cast, Walter has connected strongly with audiences on the festival circuit, playing to sold-out screenings in New York and Beverly Hills while eliciting both laughter and tears.

Director Biography - Julie Restivo

Julie Restivo is a Claremont, California–based writer, director, and producer originally from Rhode Island. Her work explores imagination, loss, and connection through stories that blend humor and heartache. She is drawn to character-driven storytelling, with a particular love for coming-of-age narratives infused with a touch of magic.

Julie began her career in the entertainment industry as a production assistant on the long-running television show, “The Simpsons.” She went on to develop, write, and co-produce several award-winning web series, including “My Alibi,” starring Alison Brie, and two seasons of “I <3 Vampires.” As a screenwriter, she has received accolades from the Slamdance Screenwriting Competition and the Webby Awards, and has written for Disney, Lifetime, CBS Interactive, and ABC Family.

Encouraged by her longtime writers’ group, Julie expanded into directing, bringing her distinctive voice and emotional sensibility to the screen. Her filmmaking is grounded in personal experience, often drawing inspiration from her family life and her East Coast roots—including formative memories of the ocean that helped shape the central metaphor of Walter.

Director Statement

“Walter” is a warm, humorous, and slightly offbeat short about a father and son rebuilding connection in the wake of divorce— with imagination becoming both a refuge and a bridge back to one another.

This film began as a reflection on how imagination helps us navigate change. I approached the story both as a child of divorce and as a parent, aiming to capture the way creativity can be a lifeline in dealing with loss. When my own family faced a difficult period, it occurred to me that clinging to the past can be as futile as trying to hold onto a wave.

“Walter” also became a metaphor for the emotional ecology of family—how one person’s feelings and actions inevitably affect the others, often without intention. Every word, every silence, sends ripples that travel further than we realize. The film explores what happens when those ripples collide—when love, loss, and misunderstanding meet in the same tide—and how empathy can restore balance.

I filmed “Walter” with my two children (and a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo by my husband) in our own neighborhood shortly after we’d moved to a new city. The process became a way for us to reconnect and feel rooted in a new place—an act of collaborative creation that celebrated a new beginning while gently letting go of what we’d left behind.

“Walter” reminds us that love, like a wave, never truly disappears—it just returns in a new form.
