Director Biography - Tanya Taylor

A multifaceted award-winning director who hails from Jamaica. With almost two decades of production experience, she has developed over 400 hours of content.
At her core, she’s still the 5-year-old sitting on the terrazzo tiled floor, too close to the black and white television. Grinning as the station identifier cross dissolves into the Jamaican flag billowing in the wind to the national anthem. The beginning of transmission of the island’s only television channel. Her love affair with the escapism promised by the screen began then and has intensified over the decades.
She made her transition to television after a three-year tenure in Advertising, in which she served as a Creative Director for various campaigns for KFC, Pizza Hut, Jamaica Broilers and many others. That experience inspired her to get behind the camera and embark on directing commercials and long form content.
In 2002, Tanya founded Anyhoo Productions, a boutique company that specialized in creating branded content from concept to completion. During her time overseeing Anyhoo, she co-created a nine-season studio series the KFC Quiz Show and a competition series Heineken Green Synergy which featured Grandmaster Flash. She also produced and directed several other series including the international game show (Digicel’s) Deal or No Deal.
Tanya’s devotion to diverse programming is evident in the content she’s created. From commercials to narrative to reality series, her experience and expertise spans across a variety of formats.
Recently, Tanya relocated to New York to continue developing global content. During this time, she continues to write, produce and direct in the Jamaican commercial world. With her work securing 7 Caribbean Advertising Association Awards and a Jamaican Chamber of Commerce award.
In 2019 she wrote, directed and produced her first narrative short, WINSTON. Garnering a nomination for best screenplay and 2 best actor awards for the titular character. Tanya is currently developing the docu-fiction feature Jamaican Pride, the documentary Dreya, the docu-series How to be Jamaican, as well as several other projects.

Director Statement

Jamaica has long been considered one of the most homophobic societies in the western hemisphere. However, while, I’m heterosexual, possibly more than 50% of my Jamaican social circle is LGBTQ+ identifying. Some have carved a place for themselves in society, while others comfortably fly below the radar. Some have just given up and escaped to more accepting territories becoming their truest true it’s true. They thrive away from the stigma and shame associated with homosexuality in Jamaica.
My heart aches as I experience the code switching and ultimate struggle as they reconcile their self of sense with their national pride.
