WETLAND

Wetlands are home to large biodiversity, supporting a wealth of flora and fauna. They are environmental assets that help water quality preservation, erosion shore protection from wave action, nurseries for fish and other freshwater and marine animals, and important bird areas, groundwater recharge, carbon sequestration, and reductions of storm and flooding damages. However, many wetlands across the world have been damaged causing negative impacts on biological diversity and livelihoods of fishers, farmers and others. There are about 14183 wetlands in Gujarat, India, encompassing 1358 Inland natural,2448 Costal natural,10075 Inland man-made, and 302 Costal man-made wetlands.

Gujarat has wetland bird sanctuaries like Nalsarovar lake, khijadiya wetlands, Thol Lake and Porbandar lake. The Little and Great Rann of Kutch is a huge marshland in the monsoon. 4 wetlands in Gujarat are Ramsar wetland sites.

Thanks to its wetlands, Gujarat has huge water bird concentrations and together with Odisha is one of the best states for migratory birdwatching.
