Experiencing Interruptions?

Vitis prohibita, resistant grapes coming out of the shadows

They arrived from America with terrible diseases and almost annihilated the vineyard then were accused of contamination, incriminated to drive crazy and found guilty of having bad taste.

Isabella, Jacquez, Clinton, Herbemont, Noah and Othello were banished from vineyards in France by the government in 1934 and later, the prohibition was extended to almost the hybrid vines in the countries of the European Union.

Nevertheless, these vines and more generally the hybrids, are naturally resistant vines in the diseases of the vineyard, adapted very well to grounds and to climates of numerous countries, with characteristic and outstanding tastes. They are one of answers to the current problems of the vine growing: over treatment and environmental pollution, decrease of the life expectancy of vineyards ...

Defying an extremely hostile legislation and in spite of the very bad reputation of these vines, rebel farmers, convinced of their true values, did not stop cultivating the prohibited grape varieties everywhere in Europe.

We invite you in a gustative journey off the beaten track of the oenology and to follow the current fight of the enthusiasts-Resistance fighters for the rehabilitation of these wines.

We are going to understand the extraordinary history of these vines, why they are a solution for a responsible and environment-friendly vine growing and how they are a member from now on of the rural heritage in very numerous places in the world.
