Director Statement

Venus Inn started with a strong visual that echoed in my head from the get go: a neon lit, seedy, and retro motel in a barren landscape. This image struck a vulnerable place in me, a place that I pulled these eclectic characters and overarching themes from, and stirred images of nostalgia that carried me to the core of the story. Margo’s character arc is to address her past, acknowledge her trauma, and repurpose those negative emotions into something useful to move forward; this idea manifested itself in the plot and characters of Venus Inn.

I went into this project with the intention of building a world and language between strong female characters and themes, and this is something I feel I have a passion and voice for. Writing complex and exciting female characters with a deeper sense of longing other than something romantic or self-image based is something I’ve found to be cathartic, but also exciting and fulfilling. And I like to think I’ve found my niche in doing so (Example: my junior-year film, Repo). With the eclectic nature of the theme and visuals of Venus Inn, I think everyone involved in this project can bring a unique and useful perspective to this story. I strive to create a collaborative and safe environment for our crew and cast to explore.

I hope to bring my unique sensibilities and specific POV as a young female artist to this project. I’ve always loved older movies and music, and I tend to pull stylistic choices and sentiments from the past to inject into new and fresh ideas. We should push boundaries creatively and logistically while in film school! Finding my voice as a writer has been an empowering and exciting journey, and I cannot wait to translate that fully into my journey as a director as well.
