Experiencing Interruptions?

Van Gogh's Eyes

Vincent Van Gogh lives.
It is modern-day and Amos Cutter, the lead character in a new film called “Van Gogh’s Eyes”, believes he is the reincarnation of the famous painter. Everyone else thinks Amos is delusional. But is he?
“Van Gogh’s Eyes” is a film that follows the story of Amos and his brother Paul, who struggle to make ends meet in a dilapidated and deserted seaside town. They run an old hotel that has seen better days, and Paul makes money selling fake proximations of stolen art, painted by Amos. But Amos has lost his ability to paint after taking psychoactive drugs to smooth out his delusions.
Enter Eva, who Amos recognizes as a past love from his previous existence. Then known as Sien, she was a prostitute/washerwoman and the model for a famous drawing called ‘Sorrow”. Their broken relationship was crushing for Vincent, whose loneliness, alienation, and self-mutilation forever marked him as the suffering artist ready to die for art. Now, she is a beautiful teenager seeking stardom in adult films when she mysteriously reenters his life. Her manipulative manager/boyfriend, Antony, is an addicted young man and a troubled soul, who Amos recognizes as the person who accidentally shot him in France, ending his previous life.
Is the mysterious circle of reincarnation about to take another turn?
The turbulent environment of the late nineteenth-century European art market with the onset of Impressionism reviled Van Gogh’s art. Having sold only one painting, he died a failure. Now, in Van
Gogh’s new incarnation, Amos Cutter is forced to exist in a new irony, as a corrupted stolen art synthesizer and drug-altered version of himself. The world has been transformed into an international mafia-like compendium of thieves and art dealers. Fate is doubly cruel to Amos, forcing him to once again survive without satisfaction or release.
“Van Gogh’s Eyes” is based on ideas of karma, the transmigration of souls, and the meaning of artistic inspiration, emphasizing that the bonds of love and inspiration are reiterated with new significance throughout the centuries in pursuit of a higher form of being, healing, and love. Are Amos and Paul reconfigurations of Vincent and Theo, remixed and bastardized by time? Is Eva the reinvigorating muse Amos needs to reconnect with his artistic drive? Will Anthony repeat the manslaughter of an artistic soul seeking only pure love through art? Or is Amos Cutter just crazy?
Van Gogh’s Eyes will appeal to a broad audience with its deep insights into these complex and interesting characters. The story and pace develop like a thriller as the drive to create, the mystery of time, and the universal experience of seeking meaning in an unknowable world pulse through every
scene.
Director Jose Celestino Campusano has co-written the script with Donald Mann, who also plays Amos
Cutter. This is Campusano’s 23 rd film. Produced by Mann and Campusano, Van Gogh’s Eyes will be

Director Biography - José Celestino Campusano

Jose Celestino Campusano was born in the locality of Quilmes, February 22, 1964. Son and brother of boxers, he studied filmmaking at the Film Institute of Avellaneda, with an active participation in independents films and videos in the eighties and part of the nineties. He is the author of the book “Argentine Marginal Mythology” quasi-biographical book about stories in the suburban area that already has two editions.

Campusano nourishes his audiovisual proposal with various suburban myths, gives prominence to strata and social referents hitherto invisible, which integrates strongly in the areas of content, performance, production and diffusion.

Since 2006, with his production company Cinebruto is forging a strong narrative flow, without following the fashions and the actors lineages. Also Campusano has been the main leader of national and international network of audiovisual Clusters, which proposes the development of a sustainable filmmaking based on the purest cooperativism and therefore with strong roots in the multisectoral organization and in the co-productions that are outside the support of conventional funds.

Director Statement

Van Gogh's Eyes is my first story not placed on true anecdotes and realistic contexts. This challenge meant blending the process of capturing and photography to capture different periods: Vincent in the 19th century and the 21st century, Vincent in conflict with Theo two decades ago, between others. I want to highlight above all the emotional state of the protagonist and of the secondary characters.
The feeling is that the characters wander in loneliness and perplexity to be in a timeless prison. This atmosphere must be felt, paying attention to the characters by the dramatic weight of the scenes and the strategic use of lenses and camera movements.

Only for information purposes, I will refer to wide and homogeneous outdoor backgrounds taken with anamorphic lenses. The landscapes contextualize without interaction with the characters, insinuating that they do not belong to them.

The camera movements change according to the dramatic progression of the story to avoid installing repetitive factors that generate a sort of plateau in the reading of images. Van Gogh's Eyes speaks of the impossibilities of a brilliant public figure transformed into a cultural icon, who perhaps only wished to be coherent with his function in life and his relationship with his fellow men, using pictorial art as a portal. I intend to approach his tragedy from a modern and poetic point of view.
