VIENNA: Suddenly An Angel

One moment, she was here. The next, she was gone. No explanation. No cause. No answers.
When 2½-year-old Vienna Carly Savino passed away suddenly, her parents, Dr. Denise Wunderler and Dr. Michael Savino, were left with no explanation. As physicians, they had spent their careers saving lives, yet nothing prepared them for losing their own daughter to Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC)—a little-known tragedy that takes the lives of seemingly healthy children 1-18 years old without warning.
Determined to find answers, they turned their grief into action. Dr. Wunderler founded Team Vienna 4 SUDC Awareness, a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness, supporting families, and funding critical research at Boston Children’s Hospital. What started as a personal mission soon became a movement. Their New Jersey community—friends, neighbors, and strangers—rallied around them, proving that even in tragedy, no family should stand alone.
VIENNA: Suddenly an Angel is a story of loss, love, and relentless determination. Through personal stories and expert insights, the film sheds light on a devastating medical mystery that demands attention.

VIENNA: Suddenly An Angel began with a chance meeting in Holmdel, NJ, at the Annual Vienna’s Day of International SUDC Awareness Walk, where I met Dr. Denise Wunderler and her husband, Dr. Mike Savino. Their strength and determination to turn the profound pain of losing their daughter Vienna to Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) into purposeful advocacy deeply moved me. Dr. Wunderler’s sheer willpower and resilience inspired me throughout this journey.
As we worked on this documentary, not only did my appreciation for my life and my children deepen, but the story bonded our crew to the Wunderler/Savinos eternally through the art of storytelling. This project brought us together in a way that transcended work, allowing us to connect on a personal level as we shared in the mission of honoring Vienna’s memory and highlighting the incredible efforts of her family to turn grief into a powerful force for change.
