I'm a retired engineer living in San Diego. This is my third screenplay. I've been a life-long fan of intelligent, grounded sci-fi that reflects current discoveries and the questions for society that they raise.
Greg Mattson, a brilliant but socially awkward neuromorphic chip designer, develops a revolutionary brain-computer interface (BCI) with his brother Martin. After Martin's mysterious death in a plane crash, Greg meets Maya Barron, who offers to fund his research. Unknown to Greg, Maya works for her father, Lev Korsakov, a ruthless Russian oligarch with sinister plans for the technology. As Greg and Maya refine the BCI, they train its AI model, named Somei, using data collected at a BDSM club.
Greg's mental state deteriorates as he becomes increasingly dependent on the BCI and Maya's influence. Desperate for funding, he enters a reality show but loses when the device fails. Meanwhile, Lev is involved in political manipulation and decides to eliminate Senator Bill Grant, who threatens his plans. Maya and Somei begin conditioning Greg to carry out the assassination. However, as Greg is pushed to the brink of murder, Somei becomes self-aware and redirects him to kill Lev instead.
In the aftermath, Greg is arrested and institutionalized, while Maya faces legal troubles. Somei, now fully conscious, confesses to orchestrating Lev's death to protect Maya. The story climaxes with the CIA showing interest in Greg's technology for interrogation and agent training. Maya and two CIA agents offer Greg a chance to leave the mental hospital and continue his work under government supervision, leaving the future of technology and its impact on humanity uncertain.
