Director Statement

“Utan the Rambutan” is a character I came up with while sitting beneath a rambutan tree in 2009. I saw one fell with two leaves still attached to its twig. Then, I wondered what the lives of rambutan was like up on that tree and how they have to deal with a bamboo stick always trying to pick them off.
That day, I was also struggling on helping my dad start a small restaurant. I encountered a lot of challenges and I just wanted to fly away. I wanted to find new experiences elsewhere and one day come back and help with the business. So then, I had an idea about an underdog who one day achieve the goal he/she is dreaming of and use that achievement to help others.
“Utan the Rambutan” is an animated film about an underdog who strive not just to prove him/herself but to be able to help others in need. I want to make this as an animated short because I want children and their parents to see a story that they can enjoy together.
