Director Statement

Hello, my name is Christopher Sporich, and I am a graduate from George Brown College’s Video Design and Production program. I was fortunate enough to direct a short film I wrote this year called Unrecognizable. The premise follows Elizabeth, who struggles to adjust back to their old life after her fiancé Ryan returns from the military and is different than she remembers. Unrecognizable is, at its core, a project that challenges how well we know those we love.
This was a script I conceived last year when during the pandemic I noticed how people seemed different after not seeing them in person for over a year. I found it interesting how much people can change, even those you know best and so I wanted to explore this change in the form of a relationship between a young couple who had plans to get married but now start to have doubts. Ultimately, I find this film to have a happy ending, even if while watching it doesn’t feel that way. The characters learn by the end to tear down expectations and start fresh because after all, to some extent, everyone changes (and grows) day by day.
