Director Statement

Growing up, It was common to hear "Can you smeeeeeeeeell what The Rock is cooking?" in my childhood home. My dad idolized Hulk Hogan; so much so that there was a poster of him hanging up in our living room. My mom was obsessed with The Rock and Triple H. We never missed an episode and managed to live through the change from World Wrestling Federation to World Wrestling Entertainment.

When I was approached by Whoops and Joseph to direct this sketch, our first priority was to maintain the visual style of a WWE match. that meant having the push zooms on the hits, accurate referee interactions, and create a wild and wacky journey for both Undercover Wrestler and Leonard.

With my background in comedy, I knew the tricky balance would be playing between the seriousness of the moment and the ridiculous over-the-top nature of the situation. I took inspirations from Quintin Tarantino, Dodgeball, and Step Brothers.

Because there are multiple stunts involved, it was an opportunity to focus on physical comedy. I brought on stunt coordinator Anne Westcott and wrestling consultant Alyssa Ratto (Women of Wrestling) who curated the fight choreography. With their capable insights, we pulled off one of the most challenging wrestling moves: THE POWER BOMB!

Overall, the film is an adventure. It's meant to be comedic. It's meant to be stupid. It's meant for the basic folk who love wrestling.
