Under Your Feet

The LZ Tile House in Lasem was once the center of tile production and trade in the 1900s, which was its heyday. Tiles from the Leipziger Comment Tegelfabriek became the foothold and decorated the houses of historical figures. However, when Suharto (2nd president of Indonesia) was impeached, Leipziger Comment Tegelfabriek also stepped down as ceramics with pragmatic designs entered Indonesia and changed people's mindsets about the importance of the beauty of floorings.
Decades later, namely in 2022, Rumah Tegel LZ is in a dying condition and a piece of history. This place is as overlooked as tiles that adorned the floor of an ancient grandparent's house. The people in charge, namely Liu Hadinata, Agik, and Peter Hadinata still care about this place and are hoping for government’s funding to conserve their house as historical heritage.

Director Biography - A. J. Kelly

Kelly, an emerging female writer and director, spent two years as Teddy Soeriaatmadja's assistant. From her narratives, she shares a unique and profound connection with her mother, whose youth was significantly influenced by Kelly's presence. Kelly’s creative ambition is deeply rooted in her frustration with power dynamics that marginalize women, and advocates for male allies who understand and champion these struggles.

"Robot Mom" (2022), which vividly portrays the complex love-hate relationship with her mother, achieved Mixed Reality Awards at the 15th Shenzhen Youth Short Film Festival and received support from the Indonesian Embassy in New Delhi in the IAWRT 18th Asian Women’s Film Festival. While the film is screened in several Indonesian cities, the film also garnered international screenings in Croatia, the Philippines, and China. Her most recent documentary, "Under Your Feet," stood as a competitive entry at the Balinale 2023. The Legendary Tegel Factory in Lasem represents more than just a manufacturing unit; it embodies a legacy that has sustained a family for generations. The documentary provides a platform to explore the family's commitment to preserving this historical establishment, showcasing their dedication to upholding its significance in the face of modern challenges.

The contrasting dynamics between the mother-son and daughter-in-law-mother relationships add depth to the story. While the former may depict a more pragmatic or traditional approach to decision-making, the latter radiates warmth and a connection that transcends the factory's declining status. This dichotomy reflects the intertwined nature of familial bonds and the emotional attachment to heritage, showcasing that even amidst adversity, as long as love endure, the essence of the house will retain.
