Director Biography - Sven Huybrechts

Sven Huybrechts is the director of the tv-series ‘Tegen De Sterren op’, which has become a household name for the Flemish audience and a rating success for years now. ‘Tegen De Sterren op’ won the television star for best program 5 years in a row. He also directed other popular series like ‘Lang Leve’, ‘Alles Moet Weg’, 'Wij Van België' and many others. Furthermore, he has written several feature scripts on commission, while he worked on his own feature film U-235 (Torpedo) with his permanent co-writer Johan Horemans. This is his first feature.
He studied Audiovisual Arts at Rits Brussels and graduated as director Cum Laude with his Short film Zand Erover, wich won Best short film at 'Het Grote Ongeduld' and Best Debute at Leuven Short Film Festival. Next to his succesfull television work he directed tons of high-end commercials (Hyundai, Samsung, Proximus, BNP-PARIBAS...) in which he perfected his clearly visual, cinematic way of story telling and is now ready to aim for a commercial theatrical succes with U-235 (Torpedo).

Director Statement

U-235 (Torpedo) originates from my love for 3 genres: war movies, submarine films and "guys on a mission" stories. My references are without hesitation movies like The Great escape, The Dirty Dozen and Inglorious Basterds. U-235 is an up- tempo, gut-wrenching action film with sharp and witty humor, essential to the genre. And this in one of the most fascinating pieces of war machinery that man has ever conceived. Based on a dark historic footnote in Belgian History: the secret trade of uranium between the Belgian government and President Roosevelt to build Little Boy, the first atomic bomb ever.
