Trout Lake Lament
A study in form; human, celluloid, sound. A young woman climbs trees and explores a marsh. In the darkroom caffenol meets onion skins, tinting the negative orange, the positive - blue. What at first sounds like music, devolves into musical sounds - not quite chaotic but full to the brim. There is only room for one duck in this marsh.
*** this film can be enhanced by experimenting with textures on the projection screen (such as wrinkled fabric) to play with scratches and marks on the film itself

Evelina Groll is a Mohkinstis, Calgary based multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker, whose work uses handmade and traditional methods to push the barriers of the digital age. Working primarily on analog, her filmmaking practice meets at the conjuncture of arts, science, and folk knowledge; using photochemistry to create images, and folk knowledge of plants to create natural dyes and photochemical eco-developers. After completing Simon Fraser University’s BFA Film program in 2025, she continued learning analog methods from Robert Schaller at the Handmade Film Institute. Her work has received support from the Canada Council of the Arts, the Alberta Foundation of the Arts, Calgary Arts Development, and the CSIF.
