Transcorporation. States Beyond the Self
A queerfeminist, transcultural and performative dive into trance and gender in the Afrobrazilian religion of Candomblé.
The film interweaves excerpts from audio and video interviews that I conducted with Candomblé initiates and temple leaders, with live performances that I carried out at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Bahia and the Goethe-Institut Salvador-Bahia. The result is a deeply personal feminist-performative investigation of mediumship, ancestrality, (trans)gender and suicide. The conversations and ritual performances and the sonic and visual impressions revolve around the conversation with the dead, patriarchal structures in ritual and social practice, the dissolution of male/female dichotomies on a spiritual level and trance as an "expanded state" beyond the self: as a mutual process that I call "transcorporation".
The research and film production have been funded by the Hamburg Ministry of Culture and the Media / International Exchange, and realized in collaboration with the Programa De Pós-graduação Em Artes Cênicas of the Universidade Federal da Bahia.

Art helps to heal personal, transgenerational and transcultural traumata. Only if we look at our pain and work through it, we can dissolve it and start loving ourselves and our fellow beings.
We are not defined by our pain, but how we relate to it.
