Tra la Terra ed il Mare

An independent feature documentary, produced outside traditional production frameworks, that intertwines archival footage, cinematic reconstruction, and naturalistic observation to explore memory and identity in the Friulian lagoon.

Tra la Terra ed il Mare unfolds in the Friulian lagoon as a layered narrative shaped by the relationship between landscape, memory, and human presence.

Between natural observation and historical memory, the film explores the fragile balance between environment and community.

In this suspended space, the lagoon becomes a living archive where time, memory, and nature intertwine.

Through contemporary 4K imagery, firsthand testimonies, and archival footage from the 1930s—alongside cinematic reenactments of the Second World War and post-war decades—the film portrays a community inseparable from its environment.

Director Biography - Gianluca Doremi

I am an independent director, documentarian, and researcher, but above all, an observer of the natural world. My cinematic vision was shaped in the fields of North-Eastern Italy while studying Lepidoptera, an experience that trained my eye to seek invisible details and respect the fragile rhythms of ecosystems.

Through my website gdoremi.it and the Macro & Nature World channel, I work to combine scientific rigor with the expressive power of documentary cinema. My work brings together high-definition contemporary footage and archival materials, exploring the deep connection between humanity, history, and landscape.

With over 60 international awards and selections, Tra la Terra ed il Mare marks my debut as a feature film director. This project represents the culmination of my visual research and reflects my commitment to preserving the environmental and cultural memory of my territory through film.

Director Statement

Tra la Terra ed il Mare is a work of independent cinema, developed outside traditional production structures and driven by the urgency to tell the story of a unique and fragile territory.

The film acts as a bridge between the present and the echoes of the past, combining contemporary 4K imagery, archival footage, and cinematic reconstruction to create a suspended space where land, water, memory, and history merge.

Independence, for me, meant time: the time needed to wait for the invisible moments of the lagoon. The macro time-lapse of the Zerynthia polyxena metamorphosis and the 480 fps capture of the kingfisher’s strike are not technical exercises, but the result of a patient and attentive gaze.

This project was created with a small and dedicated team, united by a shared vision. Working outside traditional production systems allowed us to preserve the authenticity of the film and maintain a direct connection with the territory it represents.

Tra la Terra ed il Mare is a reflection on the resilience of this landscape — a living archive that we must learn to observe before it changes forever.
