Hi, I am David, 24 years old, and I am from Cape Coast, Ghana, West Africa. I had been influenced a lot with animation from childhood, and with my parents noticing my passion as a self-taught animator, they allowed me to choose what I really wanted to do.
Senior High was almost over for me, and it was time to find a College to attend, but I knew of none that taught Animation as a major. My father, being dedicated to my passion, went out of his way and found NAFTI, National Film And Television Institute, and I couldn't be more overjoyed. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take part in the Degree program because the technical examination certificate, NAPTEX, cannot be used to join the programme. Luckily, there was an alternative, a Certificate/Diploma programme, which would be a 26-week programme for Certificate, and 52-week programme for Diploma. We decided to sign up for the Certificate programme, and went ahead to look for sponsorship, which we got. I learnt so much and I got so excited when we had to make a final production for everyone to watch. I was excited to show my work. Everyone loved it, and I felt accomplished. The panel congratulated us for a good job done, and they were very surprised at how far we, animators, have all come.
Finally attachment/internship came, and another milestone for me was reached. My animation colleagues and I went to the same place for our attachment, at Parables Studios, an animation studio based in Accra. I did my required work and it turned out amazing. As I write this, it’s my “proudest” 3 mins+ animated work yet.I gained sponsorship to continue unto the Diploma level, and completed joyfully.
I really look forward to furthering my education to the Degree level and beyond, and most of all, telling deep, amazing stories using animation.
This competition limited us participants to a 30 second clip, which contained various sound effects and a couple dialog. The limitations being very interesting and challenging for me (I love challenges), I came up with a handful of scenarios and storyboards, which were tweaked with the help of the MTTS team.
I had in mind to create a night scene, a drive to want to try something different than I imagined (I had a daytime scene in mind initially.) and having a nice color scheme blend well together.
I had in mind to start and complete this film in March, and thankfully, I reached that goal.
It was both a blast and a great learning experience making it through this short, and I wouldn't trade this experience for the world.
