Experiencing Interruptions?

Too Disgusting To Be Confused

This is a story about a man who threw a party, which birthed a globally renowned event, which led to a film, which led to a lawsuit, which led to a legacy.
Founded in 1972 by sculptor Andrew Logan, The Alternative Miss World is a celebration of transformation and unorthodox beauty. Starting as makeshift private parties held in his artist studio in an old jigsaw factory, the event married the Miss World competition with Crufts dog show, all with a sense of joy and humour. An instant smash hit, early judges and competitors included cultural legends like David Hockney & Derek Jarman. 1978 saw them take the party public, hiring a big-top tent for a circus themed extravaganza, hosted by drag icon Divine. A film about the night premiered at Cannes in 1980, and was meant to make it’s London debut on the same evening as the Miss World event. However there was an attempt to scupper this homecoming when they found themselves in The Royal Court of Justice, being sued by Miss World and represented by a trainee barrister by the name of Tony Blair…

Director Statement

This film was born out of a desire to create a movie that celebrated being creative for the sake of it. Not necessarily to advance your career, or to monetise it, but just to have fun and connect with your spirit. And hopefully by making such a film, people would be inspired to go ahead and be creative for themselves.
So I was ecstatic when I came across Andrew and the story of the Alternative Miss World (AMW) as it’s so clearly embodied this value.
Another key value that I wanted to celebrate was alternativeness. I feel strongly that in today’s world, with the internet creating such a fractured mainstream, it may feel as though there is no alternative. But I wanted, for both myself and the audience, to feel empowered again about having a choice regarding the culture you (personally) live in.
The celebration of “alternative” was key in creating the film’s stylistic components. I wanted all the interviews to feel like an alternative to a traditional talking head, which is why Andrew is always creating or doing something while being interviewed. Furthering this, I wanted the film structure to feel a little bit alternative, which is why I chose to split it into 3 acts based on the AMW’s judging criteria (poise, personality & originality), and to play with expectations by reconstructing the trial with a very playful approach to archive. I also wanted to take artistic advantage of my years of experience as an Archive Producer, and create a film that explored the many different ways archive can be used to not only inform, but also to entertain.
When myself & my co-producer Savannah James-Bayly embarked on this creative enterprise we were thrilled that Netflix wanted to support us. And working alongside them was a dream. We had full creative control and wonderful encouragement and critique from our lovely execs.
