Embracing collaborative and inclusive filmmaking practices, she brings a holistic approach to storytelling, honed from her background as a theatre maker. Transitioning from Production Designer to Director, Yvette infuses her projects with a distinctive visual flair, creating visually unique and emotionally resonant films. Her design-led artistry and approachable nature make her a beloved and distinct voice in the local film industry.
In co-writing Tomorrows, Amber and I were excited to explore the interweaving of semi-autobiographical stories within fictional narratives, crafting work from lived experiences, requires a sensitivity to both author and audience. Thematically, we were drawn to examining societal pressures around career, love and relationships, body and self-image, as well as the existential crises of early 30s life. Imagine "Groundhog Day" with a feminist twist.
While our focus was centred on the "female" experience, the core message in Tomorrows isn’t strictly gendered. It speaks to the universal struggle within contemporary culture, balancing hope and positivity whilst navigating life without a guidebook. Change is possible—sometimes, it just takes a shift in perspective.
In my journey from production designer to director, I'm particularly excited about incorporating comedy into visual narratives. I believe humour has a unique power to disarm, connect, and shift perspectives, making it an ideal medium for exploring intersectional stories with complexity and nuance.
Additionally, I'm experimenting with creating a unique visual language for the screen. Building on my background as a production designer, I’m delving into in-camera effects and the heightened theatricality of scenography. This approach enhances the dramaturgical impact of my work, seamlessly blending theme and form. It’s an essential part of establishing my voice as a director with a multidisciplinary perspective.
For Amber and I, this is a production of firsts. As co-writers, director and producer collectively we headed into production driven to create a project that matched our values in both narrative storytelling, the type of filmmakers we want to be and the community we seek to create. Tomorrows was an ambitious first film, we think it was worth it, go hard or go home! I honestly can't believe we made it this far! It's been an incredibly rewarding, challenging, life changing journey and I'm so grateful for all our collaborators who have made this film their own.
