To Kill the Birds & the Bees is a film that is inspired by personal stories of many people in my life and in Singapore. They share a thematic commonality of experiencing the highly sanitised way our country approaches the topic of sex from in our day to day lives- be it in our sex education (or lack therof) or parents shying from having open conversations about sex with their kids.
As Singapore undergoes a metamorphosis from a conservative society to one that is more liberal at times, this film endeavours to investigate what it means to live in these disruptive times. We have been observing that the conversations we have about sex in Singapore has created a confused generation that does not know how to hold an honest conversation about sex, leading to societal harms such as the hyper-sexualisation of our children and teens who feel afraid to approach their parents or other responsible adults when confronted with issues of sex and sexuality. The resultant of this is hypocrisy and an underlying fear of judgement.
As such, we have created this film to highlight these urgent issues which we have brushed under the carpet in a fun and engaging manner, with the hopes of capturing the attention of our viewers and to provoke much overdue conversations.
