Those Stars in the Sky
The notion that people become stars after death is eerily ironic, given India's brutal reality of corporate-led violence and murder. Since economic reforms, common people have been sacrificed for corporate interests, losing rights and suffering environmental damage.
In Odisha, communities from Kashipur, Niyamgiri, Dhinkia, and Kaling Nagar have bravely resisted giants like Aditya Birla, Vedanta, POSCO, and TATA, suffering loss of loved ones to state or corporate-sponsored violence. This film chronicles their struggles exposing the State's internal conflict between development and citizens' fundamental rights.

Deba Ranjan (full name: Deba Ranjan Sarangi) is a human rights activist, writer and documentary film-maker of Odisha/India. His first documentary film is ‘The Conflict “ Whose Loss Whose Gain’ is on indigenous people who are caught up between present-day corporate globalization and religious communalism. "From Hindu to Hindutva" was his second film which won prestigious Sarat Chandran Award from ViBGYOR Film Festival, 2012.
His third film, titled “At the crossroads”, is on how Indian state is waging war against its own people.
Recently he made "Formless Form" on religious movements arisen across the subcontinent to abolish oppressive caste system. This has been selected by Sign film festival and others also.
He has already done seven documentary films. Besides filmmaking, Deba Ranjan also writes short stories and articles in different magazines/newspapers. His Odia short story collection ‘ Pahadara Peeda’ is carrying ten such stories on the life of the people of Odisha.
I did this film in 2019. This is reedition of the earlier film. When I found similar situation in those areas then I decided to publish its reedition with minor improvement. Film making is not a subject of entertainment. Rather it is part of one's expression of own thoughts through images. The script dies when the characters come in the film and they carry the script definitely in a order chosen by the director. One can't survive without expressing his / her own feelings and filmmaking is a medium of such. Creativity is based on how we look at our surroundings and our society. My society is engulfed with several such human crises and a day is not passed on which a painful incident around me is not happening. My films are voices of my people to whom I love most.
