The second golden age, challenges of love
A human-rights soap opera
How can two middle-aged women have an open romantic relationship in a small Hungarian town today? Especially when one is a popular teacher at the local school and the other is an artist with a deep sense of justice? How does the local propaganda media pit the local community members against each other and incite a witch-hunt in the school?
While local public opinion boils, the librarian plans a reading from the worldwide famous children’s story book A Fairytale for Everyone…
In recent years the Hungarian government has been running a hate campaign against members of sexual and gender minorities. Homophobic and transphobic laws have been implemented in the name of “child protection”, a hostile and violent public discourse against LGBTQI people has become the norm, and the number of hate crimes has increased. We have felt the urge to address these political and public acts by film-making.
Our fiction film is based on true stories that happened in the last 3 years in Hungary. We call this film a human-rights soap opera. It is an activist movie, because our community members wrote the story and even acted in the film along with professional actors, and because we wish to use the film as a tool for fighting against prejudices, injustice and violence affecting LGBTQI people’s lives. We try to send a message of courage and hope through the film, and encourage LGBTQI people to stand up for themselves.
