Experiencing Interruptions?

There's Another Country

THERE’S ANOTHER COUNTRY looks at post-Brexit UK through the eyes of my father Evan, who fought in WorldWar Two and enthusiastically voted for Attlee’s transformational 1945 government. Shot entirely on Super 8 to replicate the visual ‘look’ of the post-war consensus, THERE’S ANOTHER COUNTRY wonders what Evan would make of his country now. The film weaves our present-day experience of the pandemic together with my parents’ generation’s wartime sacrifice. In seeking to understand the roots of both familial and social breakdown THERE’S ANOTHER COUNTRY revisits Evan’s home town Senghenydd in South Wales, the site in 1913 of the biggest industrial accident ever in the UK.The fact that this tragic disaster is virtually unknown exemplifies the historical amnesia and denial which THERE’S ANOTHER COUNTRY robustly challenges.

Director Biography - Martin Bryn Nichols

Martin won the BBC Young Film Maker of the Year competition in 1974. His career as an English and drama teacher meant that he had to put his cameras away in the attic but in his retirement he has rediscovered his teenage love of film-making. Director Statement

I wanted to make a film about the serious mess the country is in, and establish some real grounds for hope. I hoped there was a way of using old 8mm home movies as a way into this. I always knew the film had to be shot on celluloid as I feel it's more sensual medium than digital formats. Since the film was about recovering and reckoning with the past it felt right to shoot it on cameras from another era. All three of them were made in the 1970s during the "post war consensus" and they performed beautifully. In the same way, I think we need to rediscover the pre-Thatcherite values of fairness, justice and human dignity too. There is another country, and we need to fight for it.
