The life of trees

The documentary takes its cue and inspiration from Herman Hesse's literary and poetic composition The Song of the Trees. In fact, one of our actresses recites and interprets some poems in various locations, but it doesn't stop there. Our research expands through the works of two artists, with their memories and their works that reproduce their interpretation of trees: a wood sculptor (Renzo Lulli) who reproduces leaves, seeds, fruits, branches, and trees that have been strongly influenced by Arab aesthetic culture, signs that generally almost never reproduce the human figure, let alone the divine figure, while maintaining a strong spiritual and animistic connotation, an influence that comes from Gnawa music, which plays a role connected to ceremonies and rituals of the Moroccan tradition. The sounds of this tradition often have a hypnotic function for both musicians and listeners. Gnawa rituals are performed at night and last a long time to put participants into a trance. The rituals are led by a Maâlem (master). In fact, the sculptor's inspiration came from a dream and an apparition of Gnawa elves who called on him to produce the joint, which he interpreted as an exhortation to connect the ancestral spiritual world with the physical sculpture. Meanwhile, a watercolor painter (Gavia) moves with a dreamy delicacy that seems to be influenced by Folon or Chagall, but only as an influence, because the artist's style is very original and distinctly personal. In fact, she states that her true influence came from the poetics of Hesse.

Our documentary, which we can define as poetic and narrative, makes use of specific footage such as Hanami (the art of admiring flowers) of sakura (Japanese cherry trees) at the EUR lake in Rome, a gift from the Japanese ambassador in view of the 1960 Rome Olympics, as well as footage from Sicilian and Tuscan botanical gardens, and private parks and gardens in Tuscany. Our small idea seeks to combine musical accompaniment that becomes the protagonist itself, all on the same level without complementarity with different languages: music, video footage, people, artists, colors, and shapes.
