Director Statement

Thekkumarachottil emerges from a deep personal and cultural impulse to preserve and amplify the living traditions of Kerala’s folk heritage. Rooted in the village of Mulanjur in Ottapalam, this film documents more than a song—it captures a ritual of announcement, a sonic tradition that carries the spirit of the Mulanjur Bharani Vela across landscapes and generations.

At the heart of this work is Vasu Chami and his brothers of the Pana community, custodians of an oral tradition that exists beyond written archives. Their voices are not merely performative; they are functional, ancestral, and communal—serving as both cultural memory and public proclamation. In an era where such traditions risk fading into obscurity, this film attempts to situate their art within a contemporary cinematic framework without diluting its authenticity.

My intention as a filmmaker is not to reinterpret or stylize the folk form, but to present it with clarity, dignity, and emotional truth. The camera observes rather than intervenes, allowing the rhythm, texture, and rawness of the performance to remain intact. By doing so, I aim to bridge the gap between local specificity and global accessibility—making this deeply rooted tradition resonate with international audiences.

Thekkumarachottil is also an exploration of sound as identity. The repetitive, echoing calls that define this folk practice transform geography into a performative space, turning the act of singing into a form of cultural mapping. This interplay between voice, land, and community forms the core narrative language of the film.

Ultimately, this film is driven by a larger vision: to take native folk expressions from regional margins to global platforms. I believe that these traditions, when presented with honesty and context, possess a universal emotional resonance. Through this work, I hope to contribute to the preservation, recognition, and international appreciation of indigenous musical forms that have long existed outside mainstream visibility.

This is not just documentation—it is an act of cultural continuity, an offering to both heritage and future audiences.
