The inner mountain

In the Venetian countryside an old farmer lives alone with his animals. Of all, the most faithful is a donkey named Giorgio. When one day the donkey gets sick Antonio run to ask to the young priest to go to his home to bless the animal. After his refusal the housekeeper urge him to go to the sanctuary on the mountain to seek Saint Anthony Abbot’s intercession. In doing so and if this had been the will of the Saint it would be healed.

Director Biography - Michele Sammarco

Born and raised in the countyside between Padua and Venice. He graduated in Film Directnaion at Civica Scuola di Cinema Luchino Visconti of Milan - member of CILECT. Also he grafuated in Visual and Performing Art at IUAV University of Venice. With his first film "Mary Flies Away" he began a search path on ritual and popular traditions into rural world. It has been presented and awarded in national and international exhibitions, mainly Ethnograhy Festivals. With other three Authors he realised an interactive web documentary wich was presented in Festival dei Popoli of Florence, Roma Independent FF and Taormina FF. His last movie "The inner mountain" comes out from ritual on blessing of the animals in the day of Saint Anthony Abbot. The film is in the Official Selection of Visions Du Réel 2020.

Director Statement

My research was born and develops on rural world, like myself. I’m interested on forms of expression in popular culture, particularly on customs and rituals put in place by peasants to protect their animals, the countryside and its harvest, then themselves.
