Director Biography - Erik Akervall

I was born in Stockholm, Sweden and became deaf when I was 1.5 years old. Today I am 37 years young and feel privileged to be part of a fantastic minority, the deaf world. I have been able to travel and see the world and today I master 7 different languages.

As a director and producer, I have made several award-winning, sign language series and films that have been broadcasted on TV in different countries such as Sweden, Denmark, UK and Norway.

"The hunt for the sea's black gold" is my first documentary that is not in sign language, and which is aimed at a mainstream, hearing audience.

Director Statement

I made this movie - "The hunt for the sea's black gold", after I came across a 30 year old video, produced by my father. He filmed his father (my grandfather) fishing for lobster. I decided to make my own timeless version, about my own dad and his fishing buddy. The surroundings are incredibly scenic and it was a fantastic experience to describe and picture his lobster fishing for 55 years, at least.
