This is the graduation film of Victor Vendelbo and Mads Krause as students at Super8, The Independent Film School of West Denmark.
Both studied screenwriting but teamed up due to their shared interest in worldbuilding with a focus on the dark and obscure, creating their graduation film together.
Victor Vendelbo is from Ishøj and has been making films since childhood. Over time, he discovered that writing and directing were his true passions, leading him to refine his craft at the European Film College before further specializing as a screenwriter at Super8.
Mads Krause is from South Zealand (Næstved) and has worked as a sound recordist and 1st AD in commercial productions and the film industry for several years. He started writing as soon as he learned to read and published two short stories in his teenage years before filmmaking turned his world upside down. He then spent a decade focusing on making films before being accepted into Super8, where he became a qualified screenwriter.
We have a deep attraction to the dark and mysterious. It is important for us to create a new universe with its own rules while maintaining credibility.
A theme that is close to our hearts—one we find both relatable and yet taboo for many—is the handling of grief. We have personally experienced a tendency to suppress our emotional needs and adopt a more logical and rational role that others can lean on. We recognize that distancing ourselves from our own emotions is an unhealthy pattern, which is why we want to explore this theme in our film.
When tragedy strikes, both Victor and Mads instinctively take on the role of the pragmatic problem-solver, setting their emotions aside for later. Astrid’s slow release from her inner conflict and her acceptance of her emotions reflect something we, too, wish to learn from.
