The Hermit
Hudson Valley, early 1900s. Thomas Harland, once celebrated as "The Hindoo Nightingale," now lives in silence as an ornamental hermit for the wealthy Cornelius Van Rensselaer. But Cornelius has a secret demand: every Thursday, Thomas dons a silk dress and pearl earrings to become Eleanor, Cornelius's wife, dead for six years.
Cornelius justifies this ritual through corrupted Eastern philosophy, twisting concepts like moksha and fana to serve his obsession. The horror Thomas won't admit: part of him loves it. After years forbidden to perform, Eleanor has become his only stage.
When Helena, the Van Rensselaers' estranged daughter, returns expecting inheritance, she finds a stranger in her mother's clothes and a father lost to delusion. She and Thomas strike a deal, if "Eleanor" survives Cornelius, they split everything. But Helena discovers her mother's journal and learns Eleanor may have orchestrated all of this before she died.
As Thursday dinners multiply, Thomas's transformation deepens. He catches himself practicing Eleanor's smile when no one is watching. By the final act, the question isn't whether Thomas can escape, it's whether there's anyone left who wants to.
