Director Statement

“The Whole Lot” was born from a need to create without permissions imposed by external gatekeepers. Having tried and failed so many times to fund other scripts through traditional means, I decided instead to focus on the possible. Self-financed, the film’s $20,000 budget was adhered to through strict limits to the script and production philosophy: one location, minimal characters, a story unfolding in real-time, long takes relying heavily on the actors’ timing and a script written to enable their success. I could not have asked for a better screenwriter than Matthew Ivan Bennett. His experience as a playwright helped craft such a compelling and interesting story despite our lack of resources. Rather than bemoan what we couldn’t have, he chose to maximize what we did: ambition, determination, and a great crew willing to give everything they had to put the story on the screen during our 5 days of shooting. Thanks to everyone willing to take a risk making this film, and to everyone who chooses to support them by watching it.
