The Walk On
The Walk On is an inspirational coming of age story of Billy Mitaritonna from Rosedale, Queens (a suburb of New York City). In 1985, Billy is a newspaper delivery boy who lives with his mother, Mary (a disabled nurse) and his father, Angelo (a NYC cab driver). This 13 year old boy idolizes his father who played college and semi pro basketball. Billy has a dream to follow in his father's footsteps to play college basketball. The St. John's final four basketball team is Billy's inspiration and his dream is to play for the Redmen. Angelo vows to help his son in any way possible.
In 1986, Billy attends Molloy HS in Jamaica, Queens, which is the #1 basketball program in New York State. Over the next 4 years, Billy is cut from the basketball team by Head Coach John Wilson. Despite his improvement and growing taller, Billy is just not right for Molloy. After high school, his best friend Joe introduces Billy to his cousin, the girl of his dreams named Kristen. She is in a relationship but likes Billy.
During the summer of 1990, Billy is noticed and recruited to play d3 college basketball in Portland, Maine by Jim Graffam. This is the good news Billy has been waiting for. He goes to Maine and works extremely hard to play 53 consecutive games at Westbrook College. At the end of his sophomore year, Billy's parents get sick so he must move home and transfers to St. John's.
Tragically, while his father is having surgery, his mother passes away. Billy goes into a depression and it is Angelo who saves him once again. He gets motivated to get into shape and try out as a Walk On for the St. John's men's basketball team in his senior year. Kristen reappears and Billy takes a chance on love. Through hard work, determination, and a little luck, Billy makes the Redmen roster and fulfills his childhood dream. Angelo was the one to get him there. The Walk On shows us that anyone can achieve a dream as long as they have guidance, support, and the will to overcome adversity.

Billy Mitaritonna was born and raised in the Rosedale section of Queens by his Irish mother, Mary and his Italian father, Angelo. He grew up in the 1980's and 1990's as a member of generation X and was a big fan of basketball, especially St. John's University. Billy is a high school social studies teacher and coach. He resides on Long Island, New York with his wife Kristen and 3 beautiful children.
I wrote a memoir at age 46 and a screenplay at age 50. Not bad for a guy who has read 10 books in his life. The Walk On is a coming of age/ Father-son story that will make you laugh and cry. It is dedicated to the wonderful parents in this world who love and support their children unconditionally. But at the same time, can let their kids make mistakes and fight through adversity. "Failure can make you stronger."
