The Unpredictable Factor
In today's climate debate, there is only one factor that cannot be calculated in climate models - humans. How can we nevertheless understand our role in the climate system and overcome the crisis? We will not save our climate by numbers and calculations alone.
Climate change is a complex global problem. Increasingly extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and more difficult living conditions - including for us humans - are already the order of the day. Global society has never faced such a complicated challenge. For young people in particular, the frightening climate scenarios will be a reality in the future. For the global south, it is already today.
To overcome this crisis, different perspectives are needed. "THE UNPREDICTABLE FACTOR" goes back to the origins of the German environmental movement, accompanies today's activists in the Rhineland in their fight against the coal industry and gives a voice to scientists from climate research, ethnology and psychology.

Usually Christian Belz is responsible for various projects as a cinematographer. This is also the case for "LIEBESSTREIFEN" (scenic short film, directed by Adrian Schwartz, 2018) and "Wings of Kyrgyzstan" (short documentary, directed by Janna Häcker, 2019).
"BE WILD - Normality is radical" (climate documentary, 2019) marks his first time directing a documentary to bring the urgency of the climate movement to the screen. His upcoming project, "The Unpredictable Factor" (2022), gets to the heart of the current climate debate and looks at the relationship between humans and the climate.
In climate debates, it quickly happens that it is no longer about pure facts and a factual discussion, but that personal opinions and world views determine the discourse. As filmmakers, we see it as our responsibility to ensure clarity and to approach the debate with our eyes wide open.
Climate change is not only happening "out there" in the world, but also in our film industry. It's up to all of us to join the debate. "The Unpredictable Factor" is our commitment to an artistic and constructive debate.
