Under Construction

While writing this script, I was inspired by a tragicomic day in my own life. My father and I were running after my brother through the streets of İstanbul who had a psychosis attack after depression, trying to persuade him go to the hospital.

Over the years, I started to get unhappy and felt lost while studying for a profession that was imposed on me. While I was mustering up the courage to tell my father that I wanted change my field of study, I found myself going back to my brother's story. I asked myself why he was struggling with depression. I realized; around me, in my family, in my city, in my country even in this world, there is always a generation that has never had the
opportunity to think about what they love and what they want to do with their lives.
Even if they find it, they are always in a constant struggle with their families & society. They feel lost and couldn't find their identities.

So I sat down and wrote my story, some parts of which actually happened. During the film's creation process, after a long period of indecision, I dealt with this subject from the opposite angle. I wanted a character with stereotyped, immutable and unbreakable thoughts. And I wanted this character to be strained, shaken, and open to change in the face of the consequences of his thoughtless decisions. I want to see his reactions.

Also there is huge transformation happening in Istanbul for a while. Government approved, unsystematic identical buildings are changing the unique character of Istanbul. It reminds me of Oğuz's unique character who was forcibly altered.

And I wanted to draw attention to the importance of mental health, to shed light on this situation that is often overlooked, even shunned by families, but to the contrary requires
special attention, understanding and support.

Bu senaryoyu yazarken, ağır depresyon dönemi sonrası psikoz nöbeti geçiren abimi, babam ile beraber sokaklarda takip etmemiz ve onu hastaneye götürmeye ikna etmeye çalıştığımız trajikomik bir günden esinlendim.

Yıllar içinde, ilgi duymadığım bana dayatılan bir meslekte okurken mutsuzlaştığım, umutsuzlaştığım ve kaybolmaya başladığım bir dönem oldu. Babama ait olmadığım bu hayatı bırakma kararımın savaşını verirken, kendimi abimin hikayesine de tekrar geri
dönerken buldum. Neden o dönemler depresyon ile boğuştuğunu sorguladım. Fark ettiğim; yaşadığım ülkede, etrafımda hayatlarında neyi sevdiklerini ne yapmak istediklerini hiç düşünmeye fırsat bulamamış, bulsa da gücü kendini savunmaya yetememiş, kendini
kaybolmuş hisseden ve kimliğini bulamamış olan bir nesil hep vardı.
Ben de oturup aslında bazı kısımları gerçekten yaşanmış olan hikayemi yazdım.

Filmin yaratım sürecinde, uzun bir kararsızlık dönemi sonrası, hikayeyi anti karakterin bakış açısından görmeye karar verdim. Kalıplaşmış, değişmez ve kırılmaz düşüncelere sahip olan
bir karakterin kendi sert kararlarının sonuçları karşısında zorlanmasını, sarsılmasını ve değişime açık olup olmayacağını görmek ve oğlunun arta kalan eşyaları ve anıları üzerinden
aslında neler olup bittiğini anlatabilmek istedim.

Bir süredir İstanbul'da büyük değişimler yaşanıyor. Devletin sistemsiz, plansız müdahelesi yüzünden, İstanbul'un eşsiz mimarisi ve dokusu değişiyor. Birbirinin aynısı olan beton binalar çekim sürecinde bana, Oğuz'un da zorla değişime maruz bırakılan kendine has kimliğini hatırlattı.

Bunun yanında alt metinde bahsetmek istediğim diğer tema ise mental sağlıktı. Dikkate alınmaması, ailelerin bu probleme boğuşan yakınlarından utanması, bilgisizlikle gelen
çaresizlik durumu; kendi hastane deneyimlerimde insanlarda gözlemlediğim ve dert ettiğim gerçeklerdi.
