Joy Xing is a 16-year-old filmmaker and photographer from Markham, Canada. Her video: "COVID-19: A Message from Canadian Youth" has recently been featured on The Malala Fund's newsletter Assembly. She enjoys applying her visual knowledge as a photographer to create unique cinematography in her films.
I was inspired to make this film after asking my mother about her favourite food on a whim. She told me about many dishes from her childhood, some of which she didn't know how to make. Hearing this, I wanted to preserve the recipe that passed down through my family and made this film to keep the memory alive. I knew this would be a relatable experience for many others, especially immigrant families; through sharing this story, I hope to remind them of their own happy memories and the foods that bring them home.
