A young girl, 12, walks home from school. She is wearing her school uniform and carrying her backpack. She is walking alone.

As she walks, she notices a man following her. He is keeping his distance, but she can tell he is following her.

The girl starts to walk faster. The man keeps up.

The girl turns down a side street. The man follows her.

The girl is starting to panic.

She sees a house with a light on. She runs up to the house and knocks on the door.

The door opens.

The young girl runs inside.

Stockholm syndrome is a proposed condition in which hostages develop a psychological bond with their captors. It is supposed to result from a rather specific set of circumstances, namely the power imbalances contained in hostage-taking, kidnapping, and abusive relationships.

Lima syndrome is a psychological response where a captor or abuser forms a positive connection with a victim. It's the opposite of Stockholm syndrome and was first described after a hostage crisis in Lima, Peru in the 1990s.
