The Step of Luck
The story follows the main character, Rue, once he starts a new school. His arc of growth seems sudden with how he met his new friends and obtained a girlfriend, but that all changes in due time. The catch is, it's told through the perspective of shoes and garments, mementoes of everyday life.

Joshua Odiase is a young filmmaker/artist hailing from East Bay, California. He started pursuing his passion for filmmaking and storytelling in his Junior year of High School after enrolling in a video production class. He is drawn to exploring the human condition in his works. Utilizing idiosyncratic framing, color, light, and shadow to evoke these palatable emotions. He is currently pursuing more complex, almost labyrinthine projects with a wider range to evoke his newfound stories. He views similarly to Ed Catmull and Pixar's ideology, "Story is King, and that film can tell stories that other mediums can't.
The thesis for this project came about when I was looking to combine all the techniques and experiences I had collected over the school year to create my first short film. I chose the topic of delving into youth because it was pertinent to my life, as I navigated new relationships and friendships after a complete absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I chose to show this narrative through shoes (mainly) and garments, as I didn't want to regurgitate or be so stricken with other films in this genre, so I found my own perspective of telling this story to do the art justice. Utilizing the music and narration to guide the story given a lot was not shown.
