The Sikhs of West Midlands
The Sikhs of West Midlands is an intimate, candid exploration of the Punjabi diaspora across generations in the heart of the UK. Moving beyond stereotypes, the film uses raw, interview-led storytelling to document the "Raunaq" (liveliness) of a community that balanced the preservation of heritage with the realities of modern British life. From the first waves of migration to the creative and professional achievements of today’s youth, this documentary captures the quiet struggles and vibrant joys of the Sikh experience.

"The Sikhs of West Midlands" is more than a documentary; it is a labor of love dedicated to a community that has become the heartbeat of this region. Growing up around these stories, I realized that the history of the Punjabi diaspora is often told through cold statistics or political lenses. I wanted to capture the 'Raunaq'—the actual liveliness, the grit, and the quiet dignity of everyday life.
By choosing a raw, interview-led style, I aimed to strip away the cinematic polish and let the participants speak for themselves. From the pioneers who arrived in the 1960s with nothing but a trunk and a dream, to the modern youth balancing heritage with British identity, this film is an unfiltered mirror held up to a generation. My goal was to create a social record that celebrates the human spirit and the universal search for a place to call home.
