Director Statement

The Sheriff is a collaboration between Writer Tom Critch, Producer Colin Ramsay and Director of Photography Charles Heales. Tom’s script was shortlisted and then selected to progress into production from over seventy potential screenplays. I secured some funding for a short film so decided to release a screenplay competition. We fell in love with Tom’s story! Conditions of funding stipulated students from WSC in Bury St Edmunds would benefit from supporting many experienced professionals and gain valuable experience in filmmaking whilst being mentored throughout the production. The students rose to the challenge and began helping during pre-production by producing mood boards, artwork, storyboards, casting, sound and locations for the short. Through numerous practical sessions and workshops designed to support students own interests, ‘The Sheriff’ started to take shape. This challenge has proved to be successful for the students and has made a genuine difference to their future careers with many now being hired on a regular basis. The shoot was extremely hard work however everyone on-set fulfilled their obligations, be that a student or professional. There was a genuine positive buzz during the five-day shoot. We are all proud of the result.
