THE SEA OF DREAMS

The Sea of Dreams is a film about climbing and the life behind it. Two Slovenian climbers, Miha Praprotnik and Janez Jeglič, were the first to climb the route called Sea of Dreams – El Capitan, USA, in pure Alpine style for which they required only six and a half days. The film shows their adventure, extensive preparations and intensive friendship. However, on the other side of this great sporting success is their personal life – while Janez is blessed with powerful family bonds, Miha’s long relationship with Andrejka comes to an end. Climbing, life and love, mixed with their dreams, wishes and hopes, makes the message of the film unique: that dreams and life are one.

Director Biography - Andrejka Skračić

Born in 1967. She spent her childhood in the country, surrounded by nature which left an everlasting impact on her life. After finishing her secondary school, she went to the University of Ljubljana. She was engaged in creative writing, photography and climbing. On an expedition to Patagonia she started shooting parts of everyday events, without any special desire to become a film director. She left her studies which had not satisfied her and started to read extensively. She was most enchanted by C. G. Jung’s works that helped her realise the importance of dreams and the individuation process. During the two climbing expeditions that followed, she shot enough material for making two short movies – Jolly Roger and What’s Love Got to Do With It? She claims she eventually became a director due to searching and responding to her inner call. The Sea of Dreams has been the first film that she directed. Andrejka Velikonja now lives and works in Ljubljana.

Director Statement

She wavered between writing and photography, until she eventually tried her hand at making movies, with her fiction-documentary debut The Sea of Dreams.
“Climbing was my way of life for several years and it left an indelible mark. When I was on my first expedition to Patagonia, a friend handed me a camera and said:Here, now shoot! With these words, I was introduced into the world of film and a new chapter in my life started. During the following two expeditions, enough material was created for making the films Jolly Roger and What's Love Got to Do with It, where I was engaged as co-cinematographer and co-screenwriter. Then I chose to continue as an independent author. I took part in a film workshop, learned the elements of the film language, met a number of talented people and gained enough strength to take up directing myself.
The Sea of Dreams is my first directorial debut. It is a fiction-documentary film about climbing on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, USA. Personally, I was most intrigued with the human dimension of the venture, i.e. I wanted to present a climber as a human rather than a hero. I showed the success of two young climbers and, at the same time, the background of the story, everything that surrounded them, they had to carry within, honestly and without prejudice. My approach laid them bare, gave them depth and made these characters approachable, tangible and complete. This is exactly how the film has been structured: not in a linear way but following a cyclical pattern. In addition to the account of the climbers’ painstaking progress on El Capitan's iconic granite wall, the film unfolds their memories, dreams, hopes, their past and future… that are organically intertwined and merged in the story. A Jung’s thought resonated in my mind during the entire creation of the film: I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become. Therefore I have dedicated the film to all those who live their dreams.”
