The Seagull is a classic play that can be interpreted in many ways. Its dialogue-heavy scenes don't lend themselves easily to cinema, but its thematic overtures allow for beautiful moments of universal experience: coping with failures, falling in love and experiencing jealousy. It's also a story about art and theater.
The producers and I sought to enhance the meta aspects by placing the cast (who had performed the play on stage before filming) in and out of the rehearsal process ... giving the impression that the whole film is a work in progress, an elusive dream, both exciting and melancholic ... the feeling of being by a lake on a summer eve.
