Lawrie Brewster is a Scottish film director and producer best known for his dark, atmospheric style and for co-founding Hex Studios with writer-composer Sarah Daly. His breakout feature, Lord of Tears (2013)—also known as The Owlman— garnered international attention and laid the groundwork for subsequent titles like The Unkindness of Ravens, The Black Gloves, Automata, and the anthology For We Are Many.
With The Reign of Queen Ginnarra, we set out to create a revolutionary indie epic, inspired by the mythic grandeur of John Boorman’s Excalibur, a personal favourite of mine. Boorman’s work shows that cinema’s power doesn’t lie in realism alone, but in bold imagery, commanding performances, and storytelling that feels like legend. We embraced that same operatic intensity, where history and myth collide in a world of mist and ruin.
At the same time, I, Claudius proved that great drama doesn’t require spectacle to feel vast; sharp writing and powerful acting can convey the scale of an empire. Indie cinema shares this advantage: it needn’t mimic the polished superficiality of big-budget productions, but can instead embrace strong visual styles and performances that cut deeper. Ken Russell’s The Devils revealed history at its rawest, where power and faith are violent delusions, while Lovecraft reminded us that beneath all things lies an indifferent abyss. These influences are central to The Reign of Queen Ginnarra, a film that peers into that same abyss, where power is fleeting and, if the gods exist, they are cruel.
With this film, we aim to resurrect the kind of dark, ambitious storytelling that Hollywood rarely tackles any more.
